Burglar fires at woman, grandson, drives away; sheriff seeking leads

Kingfisher County Sheriff’s deputies are still trying to locate a man who allegedly shot at a rural resident and her grandson when they interrupted an apparent burglary in progress shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Maggie Lumpkin had just pulled up to the west side of her residence at 25616 N. 2865 Road southeast of Kingfisher about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday when she saw an armed man walk out of the house, according to the sheriff’s report.

Lumpkin, who also had her 12-year-old grandson in her pickup truck, was backing up her vehicle to flee when the man started firing a handgun at her truck.

She described the man as a white male in his mid-30s with a medium build and red beard, dressed in a white shirt, khaki pants and red and blue bandanna and carrying a red Nike bag.

Lumpkin told deputies that as she was turning to go north, she saw the suspect driving south in a silver, four-door car, according to the report.

Following tire tracks and evidence that the vehicle left the roadway at two locations, deputies were able to track its apparent direction of travel, but had not located either the vehicle or driver by press time.

The vehicle appeared to turn east on 840 Road to 2870 Road, where it appeared to leave the roadway, careening through a barbed wire fence and into a field before driving back through the fence and continuing south on 2870.

At some point, the vehicle turned east and then south on 2880 Road where it appears to have left the roadway again a quarter mile south of 880 Road, sliding sideways into a ditch.

Deputies found fresh tire tracks and plastic car parts at that location that appeared consistent with the homeowners’ description.

Deputies lost the trail at that point and were unable to locate the vehicle after a three-hour search, according to the report.

Kingfisher County Sheriff Dennis Banther issued a social media appeal Wednesday asking area residents to check their security camera footage for glimpses of the fleeing vehicle.

“We have had several responses and believe we have one distant footage of the vehicle fleeing the scene and possible footage of the suspect from earlier in the day as well,” he said.

The man appeared to have broken into the house through a west door off the back porch, according to the report.

The homeowner reported a Ruger Mark 5 .22 caliber pistol among the items stolen.

Banther said his office hasn’t determined whether that’s the same gun the suspect was firing.

“Two shots were fired and one actually hit the pickup truck and ricocheted,” he said. “We haven’t recovered either bullet.”

Deputies dusted for prints inside the house and were able to recover one partial fingerprint, according to the sheriff’s report.
