Cashion, Seiling split Saturday showdowns
Cashion has passed its first test of the season.
The Wildcats survived Class A’s 14th-ranked Seiling in a 53-49 road win last Saturday afternoon.
Vance Raney had the hot hand for Cashion as he buried 26 points.
The junior made three 3-pointers and didn’t miss a shot inside the arc or at the foul line.
Overall, Cashion wasn’t great at the charity stripe, but good enough in making 17 of 30.
Selling attempted only 13 free throws overall.
The home Wildcats led by four after a quarter before Cashion tied it up at the half and then took a threepoint lead into the fourth.
Austin Frazier added 12 points and eight rebounds as Cashion moved to 2-0.
Trey Tichenor scored 11.
Bryson Gore led Seiling with 20 points.
Cashion can’t overcome slow start
It’s nothing new for Nybergs and Gores to be leading Seiling to wins.
This year, however, the first names are a bit different.
Braci Nyberg and Kenly Gore scored 20 apiece Saturday to lead their team to a 57-50 victory over visiting Cashion.
The loss to Class A’s fifth-ranked team dropped Cashion to 1-1.
Cashion got off to a slow offensive start and managed five points in the first quarter.
Trailing by seven, Cashion cut its deficit to four points by halftime.
Despite keeping it close, Cashion couldn’t close the gap.
Neely Tilley-Bedick led Cashion with 17 points while Brooke Shelly scored 16.
Issy Reeves added 10.
Gore is the younger sister of Karly and Macy Gore, the twins who led Seiling to four consecutive Class A titles from 2016-19, an unprecedented feat since girls moved to five-on-five.
Nyberg had two older brothers who were standouts for the Seiling boys’ teams in recent years and is the daughter of the former Brandi Lewallen, who had her own stellar career at Lomega.
She’s also the niece of current Lomega girls coach Kevin Lewallen.
