City awards bandshell contract
Next steps discussed for new park in progress
Kingfisher city commissioners awarded a contract Wednesday night to an Idaho construction company to build a premier feature of Newfield Community Park.
South Industries of Menan, Idaho was the sole bidder for construction of a concrete band shell at $154,532, plus an addtional 1.63 % for the required bond.
The shell, which willbe constructed on a 42-inch elevated stage, will consist of a tilted dome constructed on a semi-circular wall.
The round stage floor will be 24 feet, 8 inches wide and 35 feet, 9 inches in diameter.
The domed roof will be constructed in a similar fashion to Hennessey Public School’s domed event center.
An air-filled PVC membrane will be utilized as a form for the concrete roof.
John Gooden, Kingfisher Trails Inc. president, said that work on the band shell may start as early as April and should not take long to complete.
The city also conducted a public hearing as required for the pending grant application for the next phase of the Newfield Park construction project.
The $300,000 grant application will include:
• completing the loop in the arboretum trail north of Robberts Avenue.
• building a pump track for bicycles near the Briscoe Skate Park.
• building Americans with Disabilities Act compliant walks, ramps and stairs near the location for restrooms for the park.
• construction of a trail loop around the wetland pond.
• trails and walkways around the new band shell.
• ADA-compliant parking.
The Newfield Community Park is a joint project of Kingfisher Trails Inc. and the City of Kingfisher.
“I can think of nothing better than a park like this constructed just a block away from downtown,” Slezickey said. “We’ll get people here for recreation and then keep them here patronizing our local businesses and restaurants’
