County sales tax vote this month

By

County voters are being asked on Nov. 18 to once again pass a one-half cent sales tax to continue to fund a multitude of county services.

If approved, it will extend the sales tax for another five years.

It was originally approved in 1991.

Each time the renewal comes up, commissioners are tasked with examining the needs of each department and proposing an allocation for the sales tax.

Some areas are seeing proposed increases and others decreases.

The allotment for resurfacing roads, general government and the sheriff’s office are among those seeing decreases in order to provide more funding for the likes of the county jail and rural fire departments.

Following are the proposed allotments for the sales tax renewal fol- lowed by the amount of increase or decrease from the current allotment:

Community services

• Resurfacing roads: 19%(-9%)

• Rural fire departments: 15% (+2%)

• Extension and 4-H: 7% (-1%)

• Free Fair: 3%(-3%)

• The Chisholm Museum: 5% (+1%)

• Hennessey and Kingfi sher libraries: 3% (+1%) General county government • County sheriff: 10%(5%)

• County 911 dispatch: 9% (No change)

• General government: 7% (-8%)

• Jail trust authority: 22% (+22%) If approved, the sales tax extension takes effect Feb. 1, 2026.

Voters approved the measure in November 2020 by a margin of 3,697 to 2,572 (59 percent). That was the same year as a national general election in which the presidential vote was on the ballot.

Voters can download a sample ballot using the State Election Board OK Voter Portal at oklahoma.gov/elections/ ovp or pick up a copy at the Kingfisher County Election Board during normal business hours.

Kingfisher County Election Board Secretary Shawna Butts reminds voters that sample ballots are specific to each person.

“If the OK Voter Portal indicates that you have no sample ballots available, it means you are not eligible to vote in an upcoming election,” Butts said. “We recommend checking the OK Voter Portal to make sure you have an election before heading to the polls.”

Butts added that sample ballots will also be posted outside every precinct polling place on Election Day, so voters can review them before casting their votes.
