Bree Taylor, Katie Bomhoff among state’s 100 Academic All-Staters

By

Bree Taylor of Kingfisher and Katie Bomhoff of Okarche were named among 100 high school seniors in the state as 2010 Academic All-Staters by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence.

Taylor and Bomhoff were selected for the prestigious award from among 535 nominations from 75 Oklahoma school districts.

They each will receive a $1,000 merit-based scholarship and a medallion at the 33rd annual Academic Awards Banquet May 18.

To be nominated for Academic All-State, students must meet one of the following criteria: an ACT composite score of at least 30; a combined SAT reading and writing and math score of at least 1370, or be selected as a semifinalist for a National Merit, National Achievement or National Hispanic scholarship.

Each year’s 100 all-staters are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement, as well as an essay submitted by each nominee.

David L. Boren, chairman and founder of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, describes the selection of scholars as “Oklahoma’s most rigorous academic competition.”

Since the award program’s inception in 1987, some 3,300 high school seniors from 325 school districts have been named to the honor.
