DALLAS BARBER

By

DALLAS BARBER, left, wildlife biologist with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, was the guest speaker of the Kingfisher Lions Club last Thursday. Barber answered a variety of questions regarding wildlife conservation from the membership and guests, but the program centered on the department’s deer management assistance program. He said the deer herd of western Oklahoma was fairly healthy, but added there is an overabundance of does. Kingfisher Lions Club member Gerald McMullin, right, participated in the management assistance program, and the result was a larger harvesting of does in his deer hunting lease. Barber said there is an equal ratio of male and female deer born each year, but due to an emphasis on trophy bucks being harvested by hunters, the unharvested doe population remains a problem.
