Grellner wins state Senate primary
Big 4 and Kingfisher native Dr. Randy Grellner won the Republican nod for the Senate District 21 seat in last Tuesday’s primary election.
Grellner, who resides in Cushing, received 4,130 of the 5,184 votes cast.
His 79.67% easily gave him the majority over two other candidates.
Kurt Murray saw 556 ballots (10.73%) cast in his favor while James Winn received 498 (9.61%).
Murray had filed for the seat in April, but announced in May that he was ending his campaign and endorsing Grellner. However, it was too late to remove his name from the ballot when Murray announced his decision.
Grellner, who owns a clinic in Cushing and also at the Stillwater Medical Center, will face Democrat Robin Fuxa, a literacy professor at Oklahoma State University, in the Nov. 5 general election.
The seat came open when incumbent Sen. Tom Dugger (R-Stillwater) opted to not seek re-election after two terms.
District 21 includes parts of Creek and Payne counties. It includes all or parts of Stillwater, Perkins, Cushing, Bristow, Drumright, Glencoe, Mannford and Sand Springs.
Grellner had previously run for the unexpired term of the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by James Inhofe in June 2022. He was one of 13 Republicans in the primary election that was eventually won by Markwayne Mullin, who now holds the Senate seat.
