Gritz re-elected Hennessey mayor

John Robert “Bert” Gritz was re-elected to a two-year term as mayor of the Hennessey Board of Trustees Thursday night.

The 1975 Hennessey High School graduate was first elected to the town board in 1979 when he worked in the family’s Gritz Insurance Agency on Main Street.

He was elected mayor, 1981-83, and at the age of 24 became the youngest, and still is, to hold that title.

Gritz, owner of Cord- ry-Gritz Funeral Home, has served on the town board since 2002, fire chief since 1985, and has been a volunteer firefighter since 1978.

He was also a volunteer EMT in the 1980s then later an EMT instructor.

He served as mayor from 2013-16, vice mayor for many years and was vice mayor before being elected mayor in 2019.

Clif Vogt was re-elected vice mayor for his second two-year term for that job.

Vogt was appointed to the board in January 2018 after the resignation of Raymond Kerby. Vogt was then elected at-large in April, and sworn in for a four-year term immediately at the 2019 meeting.

Vogt was owner and manager of the Hennessey Sonic Drive-In for more than 30 years and sold that business about two years ago.

Newly-elected board member Harold Shaw and re-elected member Keith Meek were sworn in for four-year terms by Gritz.

Also sworn in for their first four-year terms were Treasurer Shelley Burch and Clerk Kati Walters, who had been appointed clerk in August.

Burch has served in deputy positions and replaces Teresa Weber as treasurer.

Weber did not file for re-election and had held that position for about 20 years.
