Group walks streets of Dover to ‘DIFD’

'Do It For Donnie'

By

A number of local residents put on their walking shoes last Saturday to keep the mantra “DIFD” at the forefront.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk in Oklahoma City was scheduled last Saturday.

The walk helps raise awareness for suicide and suicide prevention.

Due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, the actual walk to be held at the Bricktown Ballpark was canceled.

Participants were encouraged to walk in their own communities to raise awareness.

Team DIFD usually walks in Oklahoma City every year, but this year took to the streets in Dover.

Participants walked around town and the park until they walked a little over three miles to make it a 5K.

Nearly two dozen people took part.

Team DIFD walks in honor of Donnie Guinn, son of Nathan and Stephanie of Dover who passed in January 2016.

DIFD was coined by Donnie’s friends the day after he passed as they were preparing to take the court in a basketball tournament.

DIFD stands for “Do It For Donnie.”

During that tournament, the Dover Longhorns were consolation champs.

The Donnie Guinn Memorial Scholarship was created in Donnie’s memory and is awarded to a graduating Dover senior who will be pursuing higher education.

To date, 17 scholarships have been awarded since its inception in 2016.

To donate to the scholarship fund, contact Nathan or Stephanie Guinn or it can be made at F&M Bank.
