Happy (Temporary) Fall, Y’all

Cool temps nice, but summer’s not done

By

Kingfisher County got an early taste of fall beginning Tuesday evening and continuing Wednesday and Friday morning.

But temperatures were already easing back up by Friday afternoon and more summery temperatures were predicted for the weekend, forecasters said.

A cool front blew across the state and deposited additional rainfall as farmers went about final preparations to begin small grain sowing. Rainfall amounts ranged from as little as .2 inch at some locations in the Hennessey vicinity to more at others, a spokesperson at the CHS Elevator said. “Not a lot,” she continued.

Steve Loftis, Kingfisher’s official weather observer, reported a total of 1.61 inches measured at the National Weather Bureau site in Kingfisher, bringing the total for the month to 2.22 inches and the year to date total to 28.25 inches. Kingfisher’s average annual rainfall is 35.65 inches.

Heaviest county rainfall was reported at Loyal where Jon Cochran Sr. measured 2.5 inches.

The front brought cooler temperatures countywide, a welcome break from summer heat.

Summer ends officially on Sept. 22 but a high temperature of 54 degrees late Thursday after an overnight low of 48 degrees put a nip of fall in the air.

Sweatshirts with hoods pulled up were a common sight on Wednesday. Other rainfall reports from around the county included:

Cashion – 1.3 inches at Cashion Grain and Feed Elevator.

Dover – 1.3 inches at the Rick and Robin Johnston residence northwest of Dover and 1.1 inch was reported by Monica Ingle, northeast of Dover.

Kingfisher – 1.50 inches at the Twila Adams residence east of Kingfisher and at a residence in the Wildwood addition, east of Kingfisher.
