Harrell powers Cashion past Stillwater JV

By

Cashion never could fully put Stillwater JV away.

But Stillwater never could fully stop Caden Harrell.

The Pioneers got a heavy dose of the Cashion senior Thursday as he lifted Cashion to a 40-27 road win.

One of Class A’s heavyweights was playing the Class 6A JV squad to make up for a canceled game with Hinton due to COVID quarantine. “This was great for us,”

“This was great for us,” said Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford as his team improved to 7-0.

“They rolled out a really good team and tested us as much as we’ve been tested in a long time.”

The Pioneers scored a touchdown about midway through the fourth quarter to pull within 33-27 of the Wildcats.

But Cashion did what it had done all game - gave it to its senior battering ram.

Harrell powered his way for a 30-yard touchdown run with 1:40 to play to put the game away.

“He’s a load and we made sure they saw a lot of him,” Shackelford said of Harrell.

The touchdown was the fourth of the game for Harrell, who carried it 29 times for 285 yards.

He also scored on runs of 3, 20 and 5 yards and had a long run of 51 yards.

Still, Cashion couldn’t dispose of its hosts like it has every other team this season.

After Harrell scored on a first-quarter touchdown run, Stillwater answered with a TD of its own.

Ben Harman hit Logan LaGasse for a 7-yard score later in the first quarter, but Stillwater came back with a pick-six early in the second for a 14-13 lead.

When Harrell scored his second rushing touchdown, this one from 20 yards, he also ran in the two-point conversion for a 21-14 advantage.

But, yet again, Stillwater came right back, this time with an 81-yard pass play to tie the game.

Cashion created its first bit of breathing room after that.

Harman hit Max Brown for a 9-yard score as Cashion took a 27-21 halftime lead.

The Wildcats then got a 5-yard Harrell TD run in the third for a two-score advantage.

Cashion’s defense also stiffened up in the second half as the Pioneers didn’t score again until late in the game.

The Pioneers had 340 yards total, 253 of which came on the ground.

Cashion countered with 494 yards, including 395 rushing.

Harrell averaged nearly 10 yards a carry and the team managed 7.7 yards per rush.

Harman added 65 rushing yards to his 99 passing yards.

The junior was 11 of 20 with two TDs and two picks.

Brexten Green ran it 12 times for 41 yards. He also had six catches for 40 yards.

Harrell caught two passes for 38 yards, giving him 323 total yards.

As always, Harrell wasn’t a standout on just one side of the ball.

He was one of four Wildcats with eight tackles.

He was joined by Jacob Farrow, Max Brown and Nick Nabavi.

Justice Broadbent, who missed the first half of the season with an ankle injury, led the team with 16 tackles. He was in on three tackles for a loss.

The Wildcats had six altogether.

Cashion is off this week before returning to action Oct. 23.

The Wildcats will resume District A-3 action at Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid.
