Harvest off to slow start
Some canola rolls in to elevators; wheat waiting
Cool weather and frequent overnight showers have delayed the start of the 2020 wheat harvest, county grain elevator operators say.
No wheat had been received at county elevators as of Thursday morning, a survey indicated.
However, skies cleared Friday and there were reports that producers would begin attempting to harvest the grain later in the day.
Some canola, which was swathed a week earlier, was combined last week.
Glen and Kathy Newer harvested two fields totaling 235 acres beginning Tuesday. One field yielded 22 bushels per acre and the other 29.
Much of the county’s wheat is approaching maturity and waiting only sunny skies – and maybe a little wind – to start the seasonal harvest rush.
