FSA district director updates Lions on Coronavirus Food Assistance Program
The coronavirus has affected nearly every aspect of life in America.
Farming is no exception.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has unveiled a program designed to assist farmers and ranchers whose operations have been directly impacted by the pandemic.
Jaramie Karcher, district director for the USDA’s Farm Service Agency, spoke to Kingfisher Lions Club members Thursday about the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program.
It was the first meeting for the local civic club since early March.
The program assists producers who have faced price declines and additional marketing costs due to COVID-19.
It provides financial assistance to producers who have seen a 5 percentor-greater price decline in their respective commodities.
It also provides assistance to those who have suffered losses due to market supply chain disruptions and face additional significant market loss.
Eligible commodities include:
• Non-specialty crops such as wheat, canola, soybeans and others;
• Wool;
• Livestock - cattle, hogs and sheep (lambs and yearlings only);
• Dairy;
• Specialty crops that include fruits, vegetables, nuts and more.
The USDA is now accepting applications through Aug. 28, 2020.
Producers can apply at the Kingfisher County FSA office located at 1600 S. 13th St. in Kingfisher.
