Hennessey Community Center repairs approved
Hennessey town board members approved two changes to plans for the community pool at a special meeting last Wednesday (Sunday, Sept. 1 edition), but also took care of other business:
Repairs at Community Center
The board approved a $6,850 quote from Major Mechanical of Douglas to replace the air-conditioning system in the kitchen area at the Community Center (formerly Senior Citizen Center), 620 E. Second St.
Gritz said the town is responsible for major repairs and the center takes care of day-to-day upkeep.
They also pay rent, said Tillman.
The town was given the center by the then-Senior Citizen group about 10 years ago because they were having financial difficulties, Gritz said.
Representing the center was Scooter Thompson.
Gritz asked her about attendance.
Thompson said there are anywhere from three to eight who eat lunch there (Monday-Thursday).
Curtis Turner, public works director, said he wasn’t old enough to go over there and eat and play cards.
“It’s a community center and you don’t have to be a senior citizen to go there,” Thompson said.
“The food is really good, and it’s only $6,” said Tillman, who added that others in her office also enjoy the food.
Also in the audience in support of the center was Jimmy Berkenbile with the Community Action Team.
Other Business
The board also voted to hire Mahala Jones as a full-time police dispatcher. Tillman said she forgot to put the item on the regular meeting agenda earlier this month.
Board members present were Wes Hardin, Simunek, Gritz and Vogt. Absent was Keith Meek.
