HENNESSEY HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS BECOME STATE SENATORS ’
Hennessey High School’s senior leadership class turned into a Senate gallery last Thursday when members argued, then passed, two bills. A bill to allow children 12 and under into a liquor store with someone 21 years or older passed 20-8, and a bill making it illegal to allow vaping or a vaping device on school property was approved 21-3. Cathy Jo Warner (seated), who is in charge of state Senate interns, served as president. Louis Jackson (next to her) portrayed a senator who wanted his bills to pass. Jackson, a University of Oklahoma student, is a former Senate page and intern. HHS students also competed for awards and winners were (behind Warner) Kaden Mitchell, overall winner, and runners-up (at right) Mariana Gonzales and Aaron Rojo. Other members of Brady Page’s civics class joined the group for a photo. Students were told how bills get started and the process it takes for them to be approved and become law. The once-a-week leadership class is conducted by the Hennessey United Association in partnership with the Hennessey Public Schools and Enel Green Power Energy. [KT&FP Photo by Barb Walter]
