Hennessey makes plans for drive-up graduation ceremony

Hennessey High School 2020 seniors are scheduled to have a drive-up graduation ceremony due to the COVID-19 virus.

The tentative plan is to hold it outside the Eagle Event Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12.

Or at least that’s Plan A, said HHS Principal Angela Avila.

Plan B is to hold the ceremony Tuesday, May 19, and Plan C is Tuesday, May 26.

The current plan includes “social distancing” and Avila told the Times & Free Press that she will “continue to monitor information from the state Department of Education and Center for Disease Control to determine what, or if, a change can be made to the plan.”

The plan includes a drive-in approach with each student and parents allowed to get out of their vehicle for a diploma presentation and announcement of the student’s activities and awards.

The principal said she will update seniors and families Friday, May 8, if there are any changes to the May 12 date.

Advance details will also be sent to parents about the lineup and parking procedures, Avila wrote in a notice to parents.

Parking is planned north of the Eagle Event Center and south of the HPS Auditorium.

Seniors and parents participated in a virtual phone meeting Thursday to discuss how and when to hold a graduation program.

It is unknown if students and parents will be required to wear protective masks, but loud speakers and online videos of the event have been discussed.

There will be no prom and there is no current plan for a baccalaureate service.
