Hennessey pool opens May 2020

Construction on Hennessey’s new municipal swimming pool is scheduled to start in August with a planned grand opening May 23 next year.

That’s according to a timeline schedule given to the town board Monday night from Carrothers Construction Co. The Paola, Kan. company was awarded the bid in February.

The design development is 95 percent complete and will be submitted to the state Department of Health next week, the Carothers report shows. It’s expected to be approved by health officials in July.

The $2.1 million pool and bath house will be located in the town-owned park on the east side of Mitchell Rd. in the middle of the school-owned sports complex.

That park now includes a splash pad, playground equipment, volleyball and basketball areas and a lighted parking lot.

The 100-by-200-foot pool will have two diving boards, several sprays and flumes and tot slides. Plans also include a 1,660 square-foot bathhouse and a 6,100 square-foot pool deck.

This is the second summer the town has been without a pool. The town relinquished its lease with the school on the former pool site in 2017. That was so the school could build a gymnasium/safe room/multi-purpose dome on the northeast corner of Oklahoma Avenue and Walnut Street.

The dome is under construction and is expected to be finished next year. The pool is being funded by a three-quarter-cent sales tax. Voters approved the tax by 75 percent in August, 2018.

That tax went into effect Jan. 1 and the town started paying on a monthly 15-year loan in April.

Some town board members say the loan will be paid off much sooner based on higher-than-projected sales tax collections.
