County under flood watch; more storms predicted

Heavy rain splattered across much of Kingfisher County Monday and Monday night.

Kingfisher Weather Observer Steve Loftis reported 3.75 inches at the National Weather Service station in Kingfisher.

However reports of 4.5 inches were reported at Cashion Grain and Feed Elevator in Cashion, by Twila Adams east of Kingfisher and at an unofficial gauge in the Wildwood Addition, east of Kingfisher.

The county remained under a flood watch at press time Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. An additional three inches of rain was possible through Tuesday night, with thunderstorms and more rainfall predicted Wednesday.

Area creeks and the Cimarron River were rising Tuesday, swollen from local rainfall as well as deluges upstream.

Other reports from across the county as of Tuesday morning included 3.71 inches at the Harold Ebers residence near Hennessey, 3.2 inches at the Rick and Robin Johnston residence northwest of Dover, 1.5 inches at the Jon Cochran residence at Loyal, 1.25 inches at the CHS Elevator at Omega and 5.2 inches at the Mike and Donna Reid residence southwest of Kingfisher. fisher.

Creeks were rising and ponds were overflowing as the result of the unseasonably heavy rain.

The forecast calls for as much as three inches more rain, the result of a hurricane pushing up from the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a flood warning for portions of central Oklahoma including western Oklahoma City, El Reno, Yukon, Mustang, Piedmont, Union City, Calumet, Concho, Cedar Lake and Richland.

The National Weather Service also advised motorists to turn around when encountering flooded roads, commenting that most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
