High-speed chase ends with flat tire Saturday; driver, passenger jailed
A driver and passenger in a silver Chevrolet pickup were arrested on alleged alcohol-related charges Saturday, but not before leading three Kingfisher County sheriff’s deputies and two Kingfisher police officers on a high-speed chase in and around Kingfisher.
Arrested were Scott Aaron Garvin, 36, 1104 S. 11th St., Kingfisher, driver of the truck, and Drew Seiger, 30, (no address listed), passenger, according to the sheriff’s report.
No formal charges had been filed as of press time Tuesday.
Sgt. Corey Thompson of the Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office first attempted to stop the vehicle on the 400 block of South Main Street about 5:20 p.m. Saturday when the truck allegedly was traveling 68 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.
Rather than stopping, the truck turned west onto Toronto Avenue then back south on Seventh Street, zig-zagging through residential streets at a high rate of speed as Thompson called for assistance from the Kingfisher Police Department, according to the report.
Police Officer Richard Sta-ton joined the pursuit from South 13th Street when he observed the vehicle turning west on Elks Road from 13th Street and heading toward S.H. 33, according to reports.
Thompson continued to pursue the truck west on S.H. 33, where he said it was driving into oncoming traffic in order to pass vehicles in its lane, according to police and sheriff’s reports.
The truck then turned south onto North 2820 Road and wove back to Starlite Drive in Kingfisher and then south onto 13th Street.
By that time, off-duty deputies Mike Shults and David Smith, who had been attending the wedding of another deputy, joined the chase in Smith’s private vehicle, a Dodge minivan, according to their reports.
Shults and Smith were traveling north on 13th Street from 830 Road when they observed the pursuit headed south in their direction.
As the pickup truck passed Smith’s minivan, Smith fired his weapon at the vehicle “in an attempt to disable it,” which was unsuccessful, according to Shults’ report.
Shults and Smith then joined the pursuit, behind Thompson and Police Officer Aaron Schlegal, who had also attempted unsuccessfully to box in and slow down the fleeing vehicle.
At times, the fleeing truck reached speeds in excess of 125 mph, blasting through stop signs, according to officer reports.
Finally, on North 2720 Road, about three-fourths mile south of East 880, the truck’s right rear tire blew out and the truck turned into a lease road, where it was boxed in by pursuing patrol cars when the driver attempted a U-turn to exit the lease road.
Staton and Thompson drew their guns and ordered the driver and passenger to put their hands up and then handcuffed them and removed them from the truck.
Garvin was transported to Mercy Hospital Kingfisher to have blood drawn for an alcohol test and the passenger was taken directly to the county jail.
Garvin was released on bond from the county jail Sunday morning, according to the sheriff’s department.
