High winds, dry conditions spark fires
Cashion, Dover, Crescent and Big 4 fi re departments battled a wildfire along the Cimarron riverbed Tuesday evening, one of dozens reported across western Oklahoma as high winds and dry brush combined for extreme fi re conditions.
The State Emergency Operations Center was activated Tuesday and the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management has been coordinating with county emergency managers and law enforcement, along with various state agencies, to collect information and provide services as needed.
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Fire Warning for all of western Oklahoma and portions of north-central Oklahoma.
Residents in those areas are asked to delay any outdoor burning until conditions improve and report any suspicious smoke or fi res to local emergency services.
Custer County Emergency Management reported a fire in Moorewood. Custer County Wildland Task Force responded as well as Butler, Camargo, Hammon, Leedey, and Strong City fi re departments. Oklahoma Forestry Services also responded to this fire. No damage to structures The state health department reported Mooreland Heritage Manor evacuated 33 residents to Alliance-Health Woodward in accordance with their emergency operations plan. All residents have now returned to Moore-land Heritage Manor.
The town of Mooreland itself also was briefl y evacuated.
Additionally, approximately five patients that require oxygen have been moved from Shattuck Nursing Home to Newman Memorial Hospital due to power loss in the area.
American Red Cross provided 250 meals for fi refi ghters in Mooreland and Fargo and operated an evacuation shelter in Woodward.
Dewey County Emergency Management reported a fire in Oakwood. Canton, Eagle City, and Seiling fi re departments responded to this fi re.
Ellis County Emergency Management reported residents were evacuated due to a wildfire near Fargo and Gage. Major County Wildland Task Force responded to the fi re. Dewey County Wildland Task Force has also deployed to assist with this fi re. Evacuations have now been lifted.
Hominy Emergency Management reported a wildfi re west of Hominy. Fire departments have now been released.
Johnston County Emergency Management reported a wildfire two miles southeast of Fillmore. Coleman and Milburn fire departments responded.
Lincoln County Emergency Management reported a wildfire on 3430 Road near Sparks.
Muskogee County Emergency Management reported a fire northwest of Haskell. Four fire departments were on scene.
Newkirk Emergency Management reported a fi re at NE Pecan Road and E Adobe Road north of Kildare in Kay County.
Noble County Emergency Management reported a fi re at U.S. 177 and Badlands Road east of Marland. Oklahoma Department of Transportation reports U.S. 177 was temporarily closed as a result of the fi re.
Pottawatomie County Emergency Management reported a fire in northern Pottawatomie County. McCloud and Prague fi re departments responded and the fire is now contained.
Rogers County Emergency Management reported approximately 10 small fi res burned throughout the day, including one fire in Collins-ville that burned 300 acres.
Stillwater Emergency Management reported Still-water Fire Department responded to three fi res Tuesday, including one near 44th and Vassar Road. Coyle, Langston, Mulhall, Orlando, Perkins, and Rock Township fire departments all assisted.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved the state’s request for Fire Management Assistance Grants for the fi res that prompted evacuations in Mooreland in Woodward County and in Fargo and Gage in Ellis County.
The grants will help reimburse local governments, volunteer fi re departments and other fi rst responders for costs associated with responding to the fi res.
The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse 75 percent of state, local and tribal government eligible fi refighting costs for the designated fi res.
Federal fire management assistance is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund.
Power outages affected 15,453 customers, including 2,606 in Oklahoma City and 1,515 in Guthrie.
No Kingfisher County outages were reported, according to the Office of Emergency Management.
