HPS dome will sport gigantic scoreboards

Big screen basketball scoreboards in Hennessey’s 180-foot diameter dome-shaped facility won’t be lost in the school’s 33,000 square-foot facility once it’s built.

A 10 foot by 32 foot screen will be at the south end of the gym and a 7x10 screen at the north end.

The scoreboard will display scores, a shot clock and live videos in a split screen, Superintendent Dr. Mike Woods told the board last week.

The price tag: $269,449.41.

The scoreboards will be controlled from an iPad.

“Think of them as big TV sets,” said Jack Quirk of KJ Filmworks from the audience. “Scorevision is a cutting edge software-driven company.”

Vice President Patrick Griffin asked if there would be a screen in the foyer.

“No,” said Woods, “but the foyer will be wired for that so we could later.”

The Hennessey board approved the low bid from Scorevision of Omaha, Neb., in a 4-1 vote at their Mon., Feb. 11 meeting.

The only other bidder wasDaktronicsat$398,895.

Voting for the purchase were President Cristopher Choate, Clerk Joe Garrison, Luke Lough and Griffin.

The no vote was cast by Dr. James M. Matousek.

When asked if the scoreboards were in the original plans, Woods said, “We have the funding.”

School patrons approved a $15.49 million bond election by 61.55 percent in April 2017 with $10.59 million dedicated to the dome.

The official name of the $8.4 million multi-purpose building has not been approved yet.

“No one else has a dome-shaped building this size,” said Woods.

The structure will house basketball courts/bleachers that will seat 1,800, have four sets of locker rooms, coaches offices, training rooms, administration offices and a second floor walking track.

It will also double as a safe room for mid- and high school students.

It is expected to be completed in November, and is located at the northeast corner of Oklahoma Avenue and Walnut Street.
