Incredible Journey
The Monarch butterfly isn’t the only airborne migratory species that has Kingfisher County in its seasonal flight path from north to south. An occasional American white pelican flying from its nesting grounds in Canada and far northern U.S. can sometimes be spotted in this area. But local resident Tom Feagins was caught by surprise Saturday morning to find a flock of dozens taking a breather on this pond northwest of Kingfisher. For a better sense of perspective on the size of these birds, the fellow coming in for a landing probably has a wingspan of about nine feet. These pelicans likely are headed to their winter home on the Gulf Coast. [Photo Courtesy Tom Feagins]
