Joy Ellen Canon was born Sept. 3, 1931, near Calumet, the daughter of Edward Loy and Edith (Andersen) Spear.

An elementary school teacher, her career took her to Hutchinson, Kan., and later, while working for the Department of Defense Dependent School System, to Okinawa, Japan, and Ulm, Germany.

After her retirement, she returned to Calumet.

She enjoyed a simple life living on the farm, caring for her pets and joining friends for coffee at the 270 Cafe.

Joy died Aug. 25, 2020, at Willowood Assisted Living in Mustang.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Jim Canon of Wichita, Kan., and Robert and Sophia Canon of Austin, Texas; a brother, Eddie Spear of Calumet; and a niece, Shelly Primeaux also of Calumet.

A family memorial service will be held at the El Reno Cemetery at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

A register book will be available for friends at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society.
