By

A former teacher and three alumni will be inducted into the Kingfisher High School Hall of Fame during the 2019 graduation Saturday.

Inductees include longtime mathematics teacher Dana (Martin) Golbek and alumni Steve Richards (Class of 1978), Greg Kannady (Class of 1979) and John Gooden (Class of 1982).

Dana Golbek

Golbek graduated from Alva High School in 1973 and earned a bachelor of science in home economics education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1978.

As a new teacher, she took additional college classes to earn certifications in elementary education and mathematics.

She began her teaching career at Taloga High School and then joined the Kingfisher faculty in 1981 as a math teacher.

Through the course of her tenure at KHS, Golbek taught all levels of math, including advanced placement calculus, pre-calculus, calculus, Algebra III and trigonometry.

In 2002, she completed requirements to become one of the district’s first teachers to receive National Board Certification.

In addition to teaching, Golbek served on several school committees and served as adviser to several student organizations.

She helped create the advanced placement program at KHS, served as the liaison between Redlands Community College to offer concurrent college classes and taught college algebra as an adjunct professor.

Golbek also worked to help maintain Kingfisher Public Schools’ standard of excellence by guiding several of the four-year evaluations of KHS conducted by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools.

In her role as a faculty leader, she served as a mentor to new teachers in the district.

Golbek retired from teaching in 2013 but has not left education. She still opens her home to students as a tutor and serves on the KPS Board of Education, where she’s held the offices of president and vice president.

Golbek and her late husband Larry have two children, Mark and Eric, and several grandchildren.

Steve Richards Class of 1978

Steve Richards began learning his lifelong career as a high school student working in his family business, Glen’s Electric, and eventually took over the operations in 2004 upon his parents’ retirement.

In addition to his role as local businessman, Richards owns his own 125-head cattle operation.

He also has served as an active community volunteer and civic leader.

He has served a number of terms as city commissioner, beginning in 1998, then again from 2003-07. In 2007, he began serving as vice mayor and then was elected mayor in 2014, an office he will hold until 2020.

Richards volunteered for more than 13 years as a firefighter and EMT for the city of Kingfisher, was instrumental in the creation of Kingfisher In Lights, the seasonal Christmas display that is the predecessor to Kingfisher Winter Nights.

He’s also applied his expertise to a number of other local projects, including the annual American Legion Memorial Day ceremony, the Fourth of July fireworks display and many others.

Richards was named Mayor of the Year for small cities by the Oklahoma Municipal League and 2019 Citizen of the Year by the Kingfisher Chamber of Commerce.

He and his wife Myrna have four children, Dawn, Dana, Dusty and Tanner and also served as foster parents. They have 13 grandchildren.

Greg Kannady Class of 1979

At KHS, Kannady was a member of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, band, Future Business Leaders of America and Fellowship of Christian Athletes and participated on the scholastic, golf and football teams.

After a stint at Oklahoma State University, Kannady started the oilfield service company LuGreg Trucking with a single truck in 1981.

Through his Christian faith and work ethic, the company has now grown to more than 100 trucks and more than 160 team members across Oklahoma.

In 2016 LuGreg Trucking was presented with the Friends of the Foundation Award for its support of Kannady’s local church and many other Christian based charities, such as The Children’s Home and Water 4, an Oklahoma City based agency that drills and maintain water wells in Third World countries.

He and his wife Susan married in 1984 and have two children, Zac and Paige, both KHS graduates, and one granddaughter, Stella Joe.

John Gooden Class of 1982

Following his graduation from KHS, Gooden attended St. John’s College in Santa Fe, N.M., and then graduated with honors from Oklahoma City University in 1986.

Gooden returned to Kingfisher in 1996, where he helped establish and promote a thriving arts community through Kingfisher Creative, a nonprofit he founded, and the Kingfisher Arts Board, a subset of city government.

A renowned artist in his own right, Gooden has been commissioned to create commemorative sculptures across the state, including a number on display throughout the community.

A tireless volunteer, Gooden has worked with others through Kingfisher Trails Inc. to envision, design, fund and build a series of walking trails that now nearly encircle the city and is in the process of raising funds for and constructing a downtown outdoor concert venue and park.

He has also been active in a number of other church, community and other philanthropic pursuits and was awarded the first-ever Volunteer of the Year Award by the Kingfisher Chamber.

He and his wife Jody married in 1986 and have two children, Valerie Johnson and Aaron Gooden, and one granddaughter, Laura.
