KHS to revisit 2021 date for graduation

By

Kingfisher High School will look at changing its 2021 graduation date after potential conflicts were brought to the attention of the board of education.

The KHS Class of 2021 is currently set to graduate May 15, but a parent who spoke to the board during Tuesday’s meeting said that’s also the date of multiple college graduations.

“There are so many colleges graduating that day that some of us parents will have to decide which to go to,” said Johnnie Sue McCully.

McCully’s youngest daughter, Maggie, will be a senior at KHS next year. Her oldest, Molly, is set to graduate from Texas Tech University next spring.

Both graduations are currently planned the same day.

The University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Baptist University and Texas A&M also have their graduations set for that date.

“I’m just asking if there’s any way to move the date,” McCully said. “Any other day but the 15th.”

Since the item wasn’t on the agenda, board members couldn’t respond.

However, Superintendent Jason Sternberger thanked McCully for bringing it to the attention of administrators and the board.

“We will take it under consideration,” he said.

After the meeting, Sternberger said staff would meet with seniors when school is in session.

“We’ll get their input and we’ll set a date,” he said.
