Kingfisher County students place among state’s best at 2019 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat
Murrays, Glaziers honored during banquet at OSU
Students from across Oklahoma wheat country recently attended the 2019 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show competition banquet at the Conoco Phillips Oklahoma State University Alumni Center in Stillwater.
In the 4-H division, Braxton Murray, son of Matt and Andrea Murray and member of the Lomega 4-H club, placed second overall with his WB 4515 variety, third in milling and production and sixth in baking.
His brother, Breckon Murray, placed sixth overall with his WB 4515 variety.
In the FFA division, Whitney Glazier, daughter of Dale and Lori Glazier and member of the Lomega FFA, placed fifth overall in the FFA division while showing her Smith’s Gold variety and placed first in baking and 14th in production and milling.
Glazier also placed 13th overall with Doublestop CL Plus variety.
Her sister, Rylee Glazier, and member of the Lomega FFA placed sixth with her Smith’s Gold variety and 16th with her Green Hammer variety.
“Participating students learn what it takes to produce milling quality wheat,” according to Kim Anderson, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service grain marketing specialist. “The purpose of this program is to promote the production of quality wheat and teach 4-H and FFA youth about wheat production, marketing, and management.”
In all, $16,000 in scholarship money was given away at the banquet. Scholarships are funded by Checkoff dollars and awarded to the top five 4-H and top fi ve FFA entries.
The contest is sponsored by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation, Oklahoma Genetics Incorporated, Westbred, Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma Department of Career Technology and Education.
The Oklahoma Wheat Commission works to promote greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development, and public education.
Five wheat producers representing designated districts across the state serve as the Oklahoma Wheat Commission’s board of directors.
Current officers are Don Schieber, chairman, Ponca City; Kenneth Failes, vice chairman, Cherokee; Tom Stephens, secretary-treasurer, Guymon; Michael Peters, member, Okarche and David Gammill, member, Chattanooga.
