Kingfisher FFA facing new era

Ryan Burns set to resign, 2 new advisers could be hired Monday

By

The most prolific era in Kingfisher High School history will officially come to an end Monday.

And the start of the next era will also begin.

The busiest agenda of the year for the Kingfisher Board of Education in regards to hiring will also include accepting the resignation of FFA co-adviser Ryan Burns.

Hired in 1999, Burns, along with his wife Lori Garrett Burns, has overseen the most successful run of an FFA program in the state’s history.

Kingfisher at last week’s State FFA Convention was presented the sweepstakes award for a multi-teacher program for the 18th consecutive year and 23rd time overall.

The 18 straight adds to Kingfisher’s record as Guthrie is second with 12 in a row from 1968-79. The total wins is also three more than those owned by Guthrie.

However, maintaining a program with such a high level of state and national prominence can take a toll.

Lori Burns tendered her resignation at last month’s meeting and will teach junior high science at Dover.

“I leave here with no hard feelings, just an opportunity to try something new and different,” she wrote in her letter of resignation.

Ryan Burns is expected to be hired May 13 at Chisholm Trail Technology Center’s board meeting. According to CTTC Superintendent Max Thomas, Ryan Burns will fill a number of rolls at the center, including teaching classes in job readiness, personal finance and welding.

As the Burnses step out, new faculty will be stepping in.

The board is expected to hire at least one and possibly two new advisers at Monday’s meeting.

Those are just two of nine new hires on the agenda.

Also listed are:

• Assistant band director;

• KHS English;

• KMS geography/head junior high girls softball, basketball and track coach;

• Special education;

• Special education/assistant high school football coach;

• Teacher’s assistant, and,

• Teacher’s assistant/ head ninth girls and assistant high school girls basketball coach.

Those hirings are on top of the re-employment of 91 certified personnel, five retired teachers on temporary contracts, 33 aides, 10 administrative assistants and also 18 people for summer employment that are listed on the agenda.

Board members will also be asked to approve temporary appropriations for the 2019-20 school year, vendors for various services provided to the district and appoint Dawn Tollefson, Pam Werner and Amy Woods to their respective roles.

The meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m.
