KPS board to address public participation policy at Monday meet

By

Kingfisher’s board of education on Monday will mull a number of new hires and may consider changes to public participation at meetings that was criticized at last month’s meeting.

The board will hold it March regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.

After the meeting is called to order, the board will re-organize.

Carly Franks is the current board president, but there will be the selection of a new president, vice president and clerk.

Franks will remain on the board as she won her re-election bid last month.

Among several potential action items regarding board policies is public participation.

Scott States addressed the board members at last month’s meeting about the process currently in place that allows patrons to speak at board meetings.

Franks and Superintendent Jason Sternberger both said after that meeting that potential changes to the policy were already being studied.

The current policy includes notifying Sternberger in writing at least five days prior to the meeting in order to be placed on the agenda.

The policy was adopted in October 2005.

Other board policies that will be addressed include bids and quotations, limited English proficiency instruction, alternative education, student retention, reading sufficiency testing, attendance policy and reporting suspected child abuse.

Up to six open positions could be filled by the meeting’s end.

Positions up for approval on the agenda are a reading specialist, high school cheer coach, high school tumbling coach, junior high cheer coach, junior high cheer sponsor and maintenance.

Board members will also act on annual contracts for financial accounting software, an independent auditor, teacher evaluation system and student information system.

Also up for approval are two out-of-state trips for FFA students.
