KPS board set to hold April meeting Monday
Bulk of agenda to be covered in KHS cafeteria to allow for social distancing
The Kingfisher Board of Education will gather in-person Monday for its April regular meeting, but will still be taking necessary health precautions.
Soon after the meeting begins at 7 p.m. at its normal location - the district’s administration building - members will adjourn and move to the high school cafeteria.
“That will allow us to have all the necessary social distancing,” Superintendent Jason Sternberger said. “That will be enough room for the board and any guests to be properly spread out.”
Sternberger said other options for meeting were discussed, including video conferencing.
However, he said recent issues with well-known video conferencing sites with outside parties “bombing” open meetings with noise or inappropriate images have deterred some from using it.
On top of that, Kingfisher’s current policy doesn’t allow for videoconferencing or teleconferencing at regular meetings, only special meetings.
“I’ve talked with all the board members and they say they’re comfortable meeting this way,” Sternberger said.
Two items on this month’s agenda, though, will address meeting via videoconferencing and teleconferencing.
The agenda has a number other COVID-19-related items.
That includes:
• Modifying school calendar to reflect May 8 as last day of school for current school year;
• Acting on waivers and assurances from the state Department of Education and Distance Learning Plan;
• Other school-related activities affected by the closure of school and the Distance Learning Plan including the summer reading program, driver’s education, Grab-n-Go meal program and graduation.
There’s also an item regarding public participation at board meetings, a topic that has been heavily discussed at each of the last two meetings.
Two items on the agenda deal with the construction of a new high school parking lot and seventh and eighth grade center.
As for personnel, the agenda allows for the hiring of English teachers at both the high school and middle school.
