Large shale donation accepted during county commission meeting

Kingfisher County commissioners approved two action items in a 10-minute meeting Monday.

First, they accepted the donation of 9,820 yards of shale from the Best pit to be used by District 1 in Kingfisher County.

District 1 will provide the labor and equipment to mine the shale from the pit, which is located in Section 19-18N-4W in Logan County.

Second, the commissioners approved an election board application for a $5,000 COVID-19 response grant.

The grant is needed to purchase additional equipment to provide distancing at polling places during the Nov. 3 election.

The application lists the following as purposes the grant will be used for: ballot drop boxes, drivethrough voting, real estate costs, non-partisan voter education, personal protective equipment for staff, poll workers or voters, poll worker recruitment funds, hazard pay and -or training expenses, polling place rental and cleaning expenses for early voting or election day, temporary staffing, voting materials in languages other than English, vote by mail/ absentee voting equipment or supplies and election administration equipment. County Emergency Management Director Steve Loftis reported 79 active COVID-19 cases in the county as of Monday.

That included 32 in Kingfisher, 17 in Hennessey, and 10 each in Cashion, Okarche and Dover.

Loftis said the cases reported in Loyal and Omega last week had all recovered.

Commissioners Jeff Moss, District 1, Ray Shimanek, District 2, and Heath Dobrovolny, District 3, all were present along with County Clerk Jeannie Boevers as minute clerk, County Engineer Nik Smith and Loftis.
