Last day to register for Kingfisher sales tax vote is April 16, election board says

By

The last day for Kingfisher city residents to register to vote in the special May 11 sales tax election is Friday, April 16.

Kingfisher County Election Board Secretary Shawna Butts said anyone who is a U.S. citizen age 18 or older can register to vote.

However, only registered voters who reside within the Kingfisher city limits can vote in the special election May 11 to decide the fate of a 10-year, half-cent sales tax proposal.

The proposal has been dubbed the “FIRE” tax (Fire, Infrastructure, Recreation and Emergency Services) by city commissioners who voted unanimously to send it to a vote of the people.

By its terms, the tax is restricted and can only be used to construct a new fire station, rebuild or repair city streets and other capital improvements approved by the commission.

A special election for the Covington-Douglas school district, which includes some people who reside in King fisher County, also is scheduled for May 11.

Those who are not registered or need to change their registration may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma Voter Registration Application form in time for it to be postmarked no later than midnight Friday, April 16, Butts said.

Applications postmarked after that date will be accepted and processed after the May 11 election.

Completed registration forms also can be dropped off in person at the election board office in the Kingfisher County Courthouse.

The County Election Board responds in writing to every person who submits an application for voter registration.

The response is either a voter identification card listing the new voter’s precinct number or polling place location or a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application for voter registration was not approved.

Butts said any person who has submitted a voter registration application and who has not received a response within 30 days should contact the County Election Board office.

Oklahoma voter registration application forms are available at the County Election Board office located at 101 S. Main St., Room 8, and at most post offices, tag agencies and public libraries in the county.

Applications also are available at www.elections.ok.gov.
