Local death investigated

A 21-year-old Kingfi sher man was found dead on New Year’s Day after apparently hanging himself in a tree near his residence at 524 W. Miles Ave, according to a Kingfi sher Police Department report.

Kingfisher emergency responders determined that Caleb Lee Tatum had been dead for some time before his body was discovered by his mother Teasha Hamilton, 39, and Clarence Quick, 24, shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to the police report.

Hamilton told police officers Chod Trout and Richard Staton she had last seen her son playing video games inside the residence about 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve as she was leaving to spend the night in Watonga.

She told officers she sent Tatum a “Happy New Year” text and he replied and then she sent him another text to which he responded about 3:49 a.m. with a “heart” emoji, according to the report.

That was her last communication from him, she said.

Quick told officers Tatum’s body was hanging from a blue electric cord in a tree on the east side of the residence and that he cut the cord and placed Tatum’s body on the ground and covered it with a blanket, with the head resting on a pillow.

That’s where the body was located when Staton arrived at the house about 2:30 p.m., and observed a length of blue cord still hanging from the tree and another piece on the ground, according to the report.

Also laying near the body were an iPhone, a bluetooth speaker, a pack of cigarettes and two cigarette lighters.

The blue cord apparently came from a shop lamp hanging from a bedroom ceiling fan. Trout found a small step ladder underneath the ceiling fan, according to the report.

Hamilton said Tatum was playing video games in a room just to the south of the bedroom when she last saw him New Year’s Eve, according to the report.

A state medical examiner arrived at the residence about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and transported the body to Oklahoma City for further examination.
