Local woman charged with stabbing BF

By

A Kingfisher woman who allegedly stabbed her live-in boyfriend in the chest with a serrated kitchen knife after an evening of drinking Feb. 25 remains jailed on a felony charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Katlin Taylor Brook Branscum, 24, 13917 E. 780 Road, remains jailed on $100,000 bond after pleading not guilty Wednesday in Kingfisher County District Court to a charge alleging she stabbed Dayton Lewis Culver, 26.

Culver sustained wounds to his left hand and arm as well as a puncture wound to the chest that collapsed his lung, Kingfisher County Sheriff Dennis Banther told the Times and Free Press.

Culver was mediflighted to OU Medical Center’s trauma unit and has since been released, Banther said.

According to a Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office report, Branscum was interviewed at Mercy Hospital Kingfisher about 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 and allegedly told Deputy David Smith that she had taken a polygraph test that day to disprove Culver’s accusations that she was cheating on him.

Branscum said when the polygraph results backed her up, she and Culver went out to eat to celebrate, according to the report. The couple drank beer with their meal and then picked up a 30-pack of beer to take home, located about two miles west of U.S. 81 on Lake Elmer Road, Branscum said.

After Culver and Branscum “shotgunned” more beers at home, Culver announced he was going to another woman’s house, she told Smith.

Branscum said she told Culver “that’s not fair” since she had proved her loyalty by taking the polygraph test. She said she then sat in the passenger seat of Culver’s car so he couldn’t leave without her, according to the report.

Branscum said Culver began striking and choking her and pulling her from the vehicle. She said she retrieved a knife used to wedge the door of their house shut and stabbed Culver.

Deputies recovered the knife in a flower bed in the front yard at the residence. It was described as a kitchen knife with a six-inch serrated blade and forked tines at the end, one of which was broken off.

Branscum allegedly told Smith that the tine broke while she was stabbing Culver. She later allegedly identified the knife found at the scene as the one she used in the stabbing, according to the sheriff report.

Branscum said after she stabbed him, Culver said he was sorry and begged her to take him to the hospital, according to the report.

Branscumallegedlydrove Culver to the emergency room in a dark-colored Jeep SUV. When deputies could not find the vehicle at the hospital, they later located it parked in front of a residence at 317 W. Bowman Ave.

A woman at the residence said Branscum drove up in a panic and said she had hurt Culver and dropped him off at the hospital. The woman said Branscum then tried to walk away from the house but seemed to be in shock, so the woman drove Branscum back to the hospital in the woman’s vehicle.

Deputies observed a large blood stain on the passenger seat of the black Jeep Compass Branscum was allegedly driving and the vehicle was impounded, according to the report.

When deputies went to the Branscum-Culver residence, they found the front door standing ajar, a pool of blood four-five inches in diameter in the front yard and drops of blood in other locations.

When asked whether she intended to kill Culver, Branscum allegedly responded, “I just wanted to hurt him like he’s been hurting me.”

Branscum is due back in court at 1:30 p.m. April 25 and has filed an application seeking for a reduction in her bond.
