Locals grab Junior Wheat Show honors
Students from across Oklahoma wheat country recently attended the 2020 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show competition banquet at the Embassy Suites in Oklahoma City.
In the FFA division, Rylee Glazier, daughter of Dale and Lori Glazier and member of the Lomega FFA, placed third overall in the FFA division while showing her Baker’s Ann variety and placed second in production and milling and seventh in baking.
Glazier also placed 16th overall with her duo mix of Smith’s Gold and Baker’s Ann variety
Cathleen Hamil, a member of the Cashion FFA, placed in the top-25 with her Gallagher variety.
In the 4-H division, Breckon Murray, son of Matt and Andrea Murray and member of the Lomega 4-H club, placed fourth overall with his Baker’s Ann variety and second in baking and eighth in milling and production.
Murray also placed 22nd with his Green Hammer variety
Saidee Wright with Lomega 4-H placed sixth overall with her Doublestop CL Plus variety.
“Participating students learn what it takes to produce milling quality wheat,” said Kim Anderson, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service grain marketing specialist. “The purpose of this program is to promote the production of quality wheat and teach 4-H and FFA youth about wheat production, marketing and management.”
In all, $16,000 in scholarship money was given away at the banquet.
Scholarships are funded by Beef Checkoff dollars and awarded to the topfive 4-H and top-five FFA entries.
The contest is sponsored by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation, Oklahoma Genetics Incorporated, Westbred, Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma Department of Career Technology and Education.
The Oklahoma Wheat Commission works to promote greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development and public education.
Five wheat producers representing designated districts across the state serve as the Oklahoma Wheat Commission’s board of directors. Current officers are Kenneth Failes, chairman, Cherokee; Tom Stephens, vice chairman, Guymon; Michael Peters, secretary-treasurer, Okarche; David Gammill, member, Chattanooga; and Don Schieber, member, Ponca City.
