Lomega back in school

By

Lomega students and staff all returned to school Monday for the first time since Sept. 24.

“We’re all back and in full swing,” said Superintendent Steve Shiever.

The two-week shutdown was necessitated by at least four positive COVID-19 tests in the district and the larger numbers affected by contact tracing.

Shiever said there had been two positive tests in the elementary and two in the junior high-high school among students and staff members.

After about 25 percent of the student body was absent on Sept. 24, the district announced it would move to its distance learning plan beginning the next day and for at least the next full week and then re-evaluate.

Shiever and other school leaders opted to continue that through Oct. 9.

“We did a deep cleaning of the entire district while we were out,” Shiever said.

He added that administrators looked at models employed by other districts to further aid social distancing and other safety measures while at school.

“We just didn’t find anything that fit us beyond what we already do to ensure everyone’s safety here,” Shiever said.

While students were learning from home, they were still free to participate in extra-curricular activities.

“We didn’t have a lot of activities during that time, but if they hadn’t been contact traced to someone who tested positive, they were able to participate,” Shiever said.
