Lomega YAC has productive time before school closings

The Lomega Youth Action Council was focusing its energy on educating the Lomega Elementary students about the dangers of e-cigarette use when the second semester was cut short.

“Thankfully, all fifth and sixth grade students received the training in February,” said Julie Myers, Lomega YAC sponsor.

The Youth Action Council began its semester with “Know the Risks” training from Seasha Schroeder, assistant wellness coordinator of the TSET Healthy Living Program.

She offices out of the Blaine County Health Department.

Council members in turn presented the program to the Lomega Elementary classes.

“The program educates students on the dangers of e-cigarettes use, an increasingly prevalent issue among teens and preteens,” Myers said. “The advertising and range of flavors used by e-cigarette companies are particularly tempting to young people.”

The presentation focuses on the role e-cigarettes play in nicotine addiction and the dangers of nicotine especially for developing bodies and brains, Myer said.

“E-cigarette use poses a significant and avoidable health risk,” Myers added.

YAC members also discussed the role big tobacco companies play in the e-cigarette marketplace.

“Tobacco companies own or are investors in many e-cigarette companies - attempting to attract a new generation of nicotine users,” Myers said.

“Council members ultimately encourage younger students to live tobacco free.”
