Longtime area priest named in allegation

By

The Rev. Marvin Lev-en, longtime former pastor at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, is one of the priests named for alleged sexual abuse allegations in an ongoing investigation by the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley said last week.

The archdiocese revoked Leven’s authority to serve as a priest after substantiating allegations that he had sexually abused parishioners in Enid and Oklahoma City, church leaders said last Tuesday.

Coakley said in a news release that an investigation by a retired Oklahoma City police detective on behalf of the archdiocese substantiated allegations that Leven, 94, sexually abused a minor at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Enid and the same person as a young adult after moving to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond.

Another allegation of inappropriate behavior with a minor at the Enid parish also was allegedly substantiated, according to an archdiocese news release.

The young man who alleged he was abused by Lev-en as a 15-year-old in Enid and then later as a young adult in Edmond reported the allegation to Eusebius J. Beltran, who served as archbishop from 1992-2011.

Leven was sent to St. Luke Institute for an evaluation related to sexual abuse in 1995 as part of the investigation at that time. Professionals at the institute sent a letter to the archdiocese indicating the allegations were possible and recommending Leven undergo extensive outpatient psychotherapy and have no unsupervised contact with minors.

Coakley said Tuesday that Leven was returned to the parish with instructions that he not be permitted to have “ministerial contact with minors unless other adults are present.”

Alleged incidents involving Leven were mentioned in an October report compiled by the Oklahoma City law firm McAfee & Taft, which was hired by the archdiocese to investigate older abuse allegations.

Leven was not mentioned by name in the report because the investigation was ongoing and the allegations had not been substantiated.

Results of the investigation once completed were presented to the archdiocese’s review board, which determined the allegations to be substantiated and recommended that Leven be added to the archdiocese’s list of accused priests.

The Tulsa archdiocese has placed Leven on a similar list.

The McAfee & Taft report also criticized the archdiocese’s earlier investigation into Leven under Beltran’s leadership for failing to interview key witnesses and not asking follow-up questions of other witnesses.

The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City employs a victim assistance coordinator who can be contacted directly with reports of alleged abuse by church clergy at

(405)720-9878, but victims are also urged to contact local law enforcement, including calling 911 if a child is in immediate danger.
