MAIN EVENT: Supporting the Oil Patch

What started as a show of support for the local oil industry last Saturday night turned into an impromptu classic car show, quarantine escape and trip down memory lane.

Local resident Cherie Evans got the wheels turning with a social media post.

A hairstylist just able to return to work herself after a weeks-long coronavirus shutdown, Evans was stunned when her stepdaughter came in and announced how little it cost to fill her tank after the unprecedented oil price collapse last week.

That prompted her to post this on Facebook: “I vote we all start dragging main again and get these gas prices up for our oilfield workers! Safe covid 19 activity!”

The post drew the interest of a lot of locals, including Stack Grill owner and event planner Scott Osborn.

Osborn and others organized “Kingfisher Drag Main Night,” and issued an invitation to anyone driving any street legal, gas-powered vehicle to come burn gas and relive their high school days with 90 minutes of driving up and down Main Street.

Osborn reached out to local auto dealership Jacksons of Kingfisher for help providing free hamburgers and hotdogs to anyone stopping by their outdoor stand.

Hundreds of vehicles showed up and nearly 600 hamburgers and hotdogs were handed out.

“It was a sight and so much fun,” Osborn said.

The fun may continue. A classic car group plans to bring more vehicles to town this Saturday.
