MMS wins bid to build 2 new sections of Kingfisher Trails
Additions will add more than 2,500 feet to project
Kingfisher Trails will soon see yet another expansion.
Board members recently awarded a bid to MMS Construction to construct two new sections to the trails.
One of the sections will essentially connect the trail from Cimarron Nursing Center to Briscoe Park while the other section will run along Overstreet Avenue west of 13th Street.
MMS Construction is owned by Shawn Scammahorn of Kingfisher.
His company offered the low bid of $265,990.75.
He said the project should be able to begin next month and will take about 90 to 120 days to complete.
“Being a local company, we’re proud to be able to continue working with Kingfisher Trails and add to what’s been such a positive project for the city,” Scammahorn said.
John Gooden, chairman of Kingfisher Trails, said the two new sections will add 2,555 linear feet to the trails.
He talked about the expansion of the trails as well as several other projects, includabout ing a planned disc golf course, at a recent Kingfisher Rotary Club meeting.
Gooden was joined at the meeting by several past and present Kingfisher Trails board members.
He said one section of the next project will stretch from the north side of Cimarron Nursing Center and run to 13th Street, just south of Briscoe Complex.
The other section will run east and west along the south side of Overstreet beginning near the Stonebrook addition. It will cross over to the north side of Overstreet once it gets to the Montevino addition.
Gooden noted several contributions to the project as it moves forward.
They include:
• The Mecklenburg Development Co. has donated the easement along Overstreet; • John Francis and John Kenney (owners of KfP, Inc.) are planning a green belt as part of the development plans;
• Ovintiv donated $15,000 for lighted crossings of 13th Street;
• TSET donated $5,000 for interpretive signs and other Trails signs;
• Walmart made a $3,000 donation.
Gooden said funding for a lot of the work is the result of a 2022 grant application.
Kingfisher Trails has also been awarded another grant from Recreational Trails Program of Oklahoma for 2023 and Gooden said the group is currently competing for the round of grants in 2024.
