Monday is date for assessment
County Assessor Carolyn Mulherin reminded Friday that Monday is the deadline to claim homestead exemptions and to assess property for 2020 tax purposes.
Homeowners must have been living in the residence on Jan. 1 and the deed filed by Feb. 1 of the year for which an exemption is claimed.
Homestead exemptions provide a break of $1,000 of assessed value on residences.
Mulherin said notices were mailed earlier to all homeowners with a recorded homestead exemption.
Property taxes fund more local services than any other source. Schools get the lion’s share at 83.2%. The county general fund, which supports county government, receives 13.8%, the county health department 2.8% and ambulance districts .2%.
