Motorcycle chase ends in crash

Juvenile biker treated, released from local hospital, cited

A 17-year-old Apache motorcyclist was taken into custody Saturday night after leading Kingfisher County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase that ended when a patrol car collided with his motorcycle.

The juvenile, who was not identified due to his age, was transported to Mercy Hospital Kingfisher, where he underwent a medical examination, including a CT scan, before being released to his mother, according to a sheriff’s report.

The juvenile was already under the supervision of the Office of Juvenile Affairs, according to the report, and his Lawton probation officer was advised of two new citations issued by the county sheriff’s office – speeding at 120 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone and attempting to elude officers.

The motorcycle passed Deputy Corey Thompson’s patrol car traveling south on U.S. 81, just as Thompson was pulling back onto the roadway from a traffic stop about 10:15 p.m. Saturday just south of E670 Road, according to the sheriff’s report.

Thompson said he heard the juvenile downshift his motorcycle, a 2003 yellow and purple Suzuki, and Thompson’s radar showed the motorcycle’s speed advance from 83 to 92 and then 120 miles per hour, according to the report.

Thompson said the driver appeared to lose control of the motorcycle, driving from the outside lane to the inside lane and then into the median before bringing the bike under control and back onto the highway.

Thompson activated his lights and siren and the motorcyclist accelerated again and then tried to turn east at E690 Road but overshot the intersection and laid the bike down in the center median, according to the report.

Thompson stopped and got out of his vehicle, but before he could reach the juvenile, he righted the motorcycle and started driving south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 81, driving directly at a second patrol car driven by Deputy Chuck Countryman, which was traveling north to join the chase.

The motorcyclist passed Countryman’s vehicle and continued driving south into oncoming traffic, with Thompson driving parallel to the motorcycle in the southbound lane with a spotlight trained on the motorcycle to warn approaching motorists, according to the report.

The chase continued into Dover, where the motorcycle crossed over to the proper lanes of travel but continued at a high rate of speed.

South of Dover the motorcyclist attempted to make the turn on the Dover-Crescent blacktop, but lost control and laid the bike down. Countryman, who was following in his vehicle at that point, wrote in his report that “I could not stop and I hit the suspect motorcycle and the suspect.”

Countryman handcuffed the juvenile and called for emergency medical services to transport him to the hospital, according to the sheriff’s report.
