New area code adds 10-digit dialing

By

Let your fingers do the walking.

If you’re younger than 50, you probably don’t even remember that famous Yellow Pages slogan touting the convenience of conducting business over the phone.

Starting next January, Kingfisher County callers and all others in the 405 area code will have to do a lot more fi nger-walking to make local calls – entering 10 digits rather than seven.

Because this area code is due to run out of available phone numbers, all new numbers issued within its geographic boundaries will have a new area code of 572.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission approved an “overlay” plan, which will allow the new area code to be used for new numbers while existing numbers will retain the 405 area code.

From July through the end of the year, the system will continue to recognize seven-digit numbers (prefix plus four-digit phone number) as well as 10-digit numbers which include the area code.

Starting in January, all 10 digits will have to be keyed in to make a local call, according to an OCC press release.

According to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, the 405 area code is on track to run out of telephone numbers by next December.

The first overlay plan was instituted in 2011 to address the projected number exhaustion in the 918 area code by adding a 539 area code for all subsequent phone numbers issued in that geographic area.

In addition to Kingfi sher County, the 405 area code includes all or portions of Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Cleveland, Garfi eld, Garvin, Grady, Hughes, Lincoln, Logan, McClain, Noble, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Payne, Pottawatomie, Seminole and Washita counties.
