No distractions for Cashion as Wildcats thump Watonga
With a winless team coming to town and a massive showdown looming the next week, there may have been some cause for concern of the Cashion Wildcats overlooking Watonga.
Not to mention it was homecoming week.
That concern was extinguished on the game’s very first play.
Grayson Davis took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and Cashion dominated its way to a 42-7 victory over the visiting Eagles.
That pushed the Wildcats to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in District A-I-1.
Watonga dropped to 0-5 and 0-2.
The second-ranked Wildcats visit No. 4 Hooker this week in one of the state’s biggest showdowns. The Bulldogs have played in each of the last two Class A title games.
With that game on the horizon, coach Lynn Shackelfrord and his staff preached to the team about not looking past Week 5.
“We’re trying really hard to just stay focused on the next day,” Shackelford said. “We need the next day to get better.”
Davis’ opening play was proof as Cashion scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters.
And it wasn’t the only special teams touchdown.
Austin Compton blocked a punt and returned it 20 yards for a score to give Cashion a 28-0 lead in the second quarter.
Rival Fields added two touchdown runs and a TD reception while Davis also hauled in a touchdown pass.
That was a 7-yard reception from Kellen Smith in the second quarter to give Cashion a 42-0 lead.
The Wildcats let off the gas offensively in the second half, but not necessarily on defense.
Watonga had negative rushing yards until Charles Black busted off an 80-yard touchdown run late in the game.
That accounted for nearly half of all of Watonga’s 172 total yards.
Before that run, Watonga’s 19 rush attempts netted minus-1 yard.
Cashion had 254 yards on 29 carries.
Smith ran it six times for 133 yards, including an 80-yard run.
Fields had 62 yards on seven attempts. His first quarter TD run covered 3 yards, as did his TD reception from Smith.
Smith was 9 of 16 passing for another 116 yards.
Davis had six receptions for 84 yards to lead the team.
Peyton Wharry led the defene with six stops.
Hooker is 4-1 on the season with its lone loss coming to Spearman (Texas).
The Bulldogs are 2-0 in the district with wins of 37-19 over Sayre and 42-6 against Hinton.
Hooker and Cashion are two of three teams in their district currently ranked in the top-five. Fairview (4-1, 2-0) is No. 5. The Yellowjackets visit Cashion in Week 10.
