OHP: Sleepiness causes wreck that injures 2

By

Two people were injured Thursday when a driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel and caused a multi-vehicle accident.

Brett Conway Cox, 25, of Elk City, and Janice Marie Fuksa, 54, of Hennessey, were treated for injuries caused from the wreck about eight miles east of Kingfisher on State Highway 33 at about 7 a.m.

According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Cox was driving west in a Chevrolet pickup-truck when, according to the report, he fell asleep and crossed the center line.

Fuksa, driving a Chevrolet Equinox, was eastbound behind a 2018 Ram pickup-truck pulling a trailer and being driven by Francisco J. Guzman, 27, of Clinton.

The report said Guzman and Fuksa both took evasive action, but Cox’s vehicle struck the trailer being pulled by Guzman.

Fuksa wound up in the south ditch and her vehicle was struck by Cox’s when it came to rest there as well, according to the report.

The report said Fuksa suffered an arm injury and was taken by Kingfisher EMS to McBride Orthopedic Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Cox was treated for a head injury at Mercy Hospital Kingfisher and released.

Neither Guzman nor any of the three passengers in his vehicle were injured, the report stated.

The report was filed by Trooper Jeff Jech of the Kingfisher County detachment of Troop J.

It stated Cox was not wearing a seatbelt but all others involved did.

Jech was assisted at the scene by Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office, Okarche Police Department, Big Four Fire Department, Cashion Fire Department and Kingfisher EMS.
