Okarche High School graduate Tim Matthews recently re-enlisted in the United States Navy while on detachment in Hawaii. Matthews, left, was re-enlisted by his uncle, retired Capt. Dan D. Ashcraft, right. He took his oath not too far from the same spot AOCM John Finn manned a 50-caliber machine gun and returned fire at the attacking Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941, earning him the Medal of Honor (photo below). Matthews is the son of Sandy and Tom Matthews of Okarche, the fifth of their children to graduate OHS when he did so in 2012. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2015. He is currently a petty officer third class and is in charge of safely uploading/downloading missiles and torpedoes on the new Navy aircraft, the P8A Poseidon while stationed on Whidbey Island north of Seattle, Wash.
