On the surface, the above photo is nothing more than four lanes of traffic open on the north end of Kingfisher. However, for travelers who frequent the county seat, that’s good news. Construction workers are nearing completion of the bridge project on the span of U.S. Highway 81 that crosses Kingfisher Creek. The project started just over a year ago and entailed destroying and rebuilding both bridges. First to go was the northbound bridge and then the southbound. Although full closures of the highway were never necessitated, traffic was reduced to just two lanes. Just over a week ago, construction workers began removing the concrete barriers between the two bridges and then last week opened up all four lanes. Finishing touches are still being added and the Airport Road turnoff from the soutbound lanes was still closed as of press time Friday. [KT&FP Staff Photo]
