President, First Lady diagnosed with COVID-19

By

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19.

A White House spokesperson said the President and First Lady are quarantining themselves in the White House but that President Trump is still working and demonstrating only light symptoms.

Before the confirmed diagnosis was released to the public, the official White House schedule showed President Trump planned to meet with supporters at the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., Friday before heading to Florida for a campaign rally.

A rally in Flagstaff, Ariz., also had been scheduled for Monday. The campaign schedule has been updated with those events canceled.

A phone call on “COVID-19 support to vulnerable seniors,” to be hosted Friday by Trump was instead conducted by Vice President Mike Pence.

The impact of the diagnosis on scheduled presidential debates is not yet clear.

The second presidential debate is scheduled Oct. 15 in Miami, less than 14 days away – the typical incubation and recovery time for the disease, barring no serious complications.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife tested negative for COVID-19, as did former vice president and Democrat Presidential contender Joe Biden and his wife.

A statement issued Friday by the Trump campaign said that “all previously announced campaign events involving the President’s participation are in the process of being moved to virtual events or are being temporarily postponed.

“All other campaign events will be considered on a case-by-case basis and we will make any relevant announcements in the days ahead.”
