Primary results mixed bag for incumbents

Last week’s state primary elections proved a mixed bag for incumbents.

Four won their party’s primary to advance to the general election, two will battle to keep their posts in the Aug. 23 runoff, one won re-election outright and one was unseated by a challenger in a close race.

GOVERNOR

Gov. Kevin Stitt, Republican, and Joy Hofmeister, Democrat,won their respective parties’ primaries by comfortable margins.

They will face Ervin Stone Yen, Independent, on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

State Results:

GOP – Stitt 248,355 (69%); Joel Kintsel 51,564 (14.3%); Mark Sherwood 47,680 (13.3%); Moira McCabe 12,033 (3.4%).

Democrat – Hofmeister 101,851 (60.7%); Connie Johnson 65,823 (39.3%).

County Results:

GOP – Stitt 1,932 (79%); Joel Kintsel 243 (10%); Mark Sherwood 192 (7.9%); Moira McCabe 60 (2.5%).

Democrat – Hofmeister 215 (63.5%); Johnson 124 (36.5%).

AUDITOR & INSPECTOR

With only one GOP challenger and none from opposing parties, State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd was the only incumbent to win a second term outright Tuesday night.

She carried a commanding

70% of the votes statewide to defeat challenger Steven W. McQuillen. Kingfisher County Republicans voted to re-elect her by an even wider margin of 71.6%.

State Results: Byrd 244,285 (70%); McQuillen 104,455 (30%).

County Results: Byrd 1,694 (71.6%); McQuillen 673 (28.4%).

ATTORNEY GENERAL

Challenger Gentner Drummond managed to unseat incumbent Stitt appointee John O’Connor to win the GOP nomination by a narrow margin (50.9- 49.1%)

Drummond still faces Libertarian candidate Lynda Steele in the general election, but is heavily favored to win the seat.

State Results: Drummond 180,338 (50.9%); O’Connor 174,125 (49.1%).

County Results: Drummond 1,214 (50.6%); O’Connor 1,185 (49.4%).

TREASURER

This race will be decided by GOP voters in the Aug. 23 runoff primary, with no other parties fielding candidates.

Todd Russ led with 48.5% of the statewide vote in the three-man race. He will face Clark Jolley (38.9%) in the runoff primary.

State Results: Russ 164,260 (48.5%); Jolley 114,707 (38.9%); David Hooten 59,686 (17.6%).

County Results: Russ 1,239 (53%); Jolley 701 (30%); Hooten 395 (16.9%).

SUP’T OF SCHOOLS

State Education Secretary Ryan Walters carried 41.5% of the statewide GOP votes and will face April Grace

(30.6%) in the August runoff.

The winner of the Republican runoff will face Democrat candidate Jena Nelson in November.

State Results: Walters 142,450 (41.5%); Grace 105,303 (30.6%); John Cox 83,012 (24.2%); William E. Crozier 12,936 (3.8%).

County Results: Walters 1,068 (45.2%); Grace 730 (30.9%); Cox 483 (20.4%); Crozier 84 (3.55%).

LABOR COMMISSIONER

Incumbent Leslie Osborn carried 47.8% of the statewide GOP primary votes and will face Sean Roberts (38.3%) in the runoff election.

The winning Republican nominee will face Democrat candidate Jack Henderson and Libertarian Will Daugherty in the general election.

State Results: Osborn

335,958 (47.8%); Roberts 128,578 (38.3%); Keith Swinton 46,719 (13.9%).

County Results: Osborn 1,185 (51.5%); Roberts 763 (33.2%); Swinton 351 (15.3%).

CORPORATION COMM’N

Kim David (41.1%) and Todd Thomsen (26%) emerged from the four-person Republican field to advance to the runoff primary.

The winner of the August election will face Democrat candidate Margaret Bowman and Independent candidate Don Underwood in the general election.

State Results: David 135,629 (41.1%); Thomsen 85,828 (26%); Justin Hornback 67,214 (20%); Harold Spradling 41,588 (12.6%).

County Results: David 888 (38.9%); Thomsen 674 (29.5%); Hornback 450 (19.7%); Spradling 272 (11.9%).

U.S. SENATOR

Incumbent James Lankford won his three-person Republican primary by a comfortable 67.8% margin, while Madison Horn and Jason Bollinger will face off Aug. 23 to determine the Democrat nominee.

(County Democrat voters put Baker in first place, with 29.1%.)

Lankford and the winner of the Democrat runoff primary will face Libertarian candidate Kenneth Blevins and Independent Michael L. Delaney in the general election in November.

State Results: GOP – Lankford 242,984 (67.8%); Jackson Lahmeyer 94,504 (26.4%); Joan Farrar 20,737 (5.8%).

Democrat – Horn 60,631 (37.2%); Bollinger 27,359 (16.8%); Dennis L. Baker 22,458 (13.8%); Jo Glenn 21,176 (13%); Brandon Wade 19,970 (12.3% ); Arya Azma 11,469 (7%).

County Results:

GOP – Lankford 1,680 (69.9%); Lahmeyer 587 (24.4%); Farrar 138 (5.7%).

Democrat – Baker 96 (29.1%); Horn 85 (25.8%); Bollinger 54 (16.4%); Wade 50 (15.2%); Glenn 30 (9.1%); Azma 15 (4.6%).

U.S. SENATOR (Unexpired)

U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin emerged with a hefty 43.6% of the votes from the crowded field of 13 GOP contenders, but still fell short of the majority required to secure the nominatIon.

He’ll face T.W. Shannon (17.5%), former state house speaker, in the runoff primary.

The winner of the August election will face Democrat candidate Kendra Horn, former U.S. representative, Libertarian candidate Robert Murphy and Independent candidate Ray Woods in the general election.

Kingfisher High School graduate and Cushing physician Dr. Randy Grellner finished in the top six statewide (4.4%) and second behind Mullin (26.1%) in Kingfisher County. Grellner finished first in his home county (Payne).

State Results: Mullin 159,997 (43.6%); Shannon 62,712 (17.5%); Nathan Dahm 42,638 (11.9%); Luke Holland 40,322 (11.3%); Scott Pruitt 18,040 (5%); Grellner 15,799 (4.4%); Laura Moreno 6,593 (1.8%); Jessica Garrison 6,104 (1.7%); Alex Gray 3,060 (.9%); John F. Tompkins 2,331 (.65%); Adam Holley 1,871 (.5%); Michael Coibion 1,259 (.35%); Paul Royse 900 (.25%).

County Results: Mullin 691 (28.5%); Grellner 633 (26.1%); Shannon 564 (23.3%); Holland 230 (9.5%); Dahm 155 (6.4%); Pruitt 67 (2.7%); Garrison 28 (1.2%); Moreno 23 (.95%); Gray 10 (.4%); Coibion 9 (.37%); Holley 8 (.33%); Tompkins 5 (.21%); Royse 2 (.08%).

U.S. REP (Dist. 3) Incumbent Frank Lucas won his three-person Republican primary by a 61.1% margin, handily winning in all 32 counties in Oklahoma’s sprawling Third District.

He’ll face Democrat candidate Jeremiah Ross in the general election, but is widely expected to win a 16 th term in Congress.

District 3 Results: Lucas44,417 (61.1%); Wade Burleson 22,239 (30.6%); Stephen Butler 5,989 (8.2%).

County Results: Lucas 1,504 (61.9%); Burleson 702 (28.9%); Butler 224 (9.2%)

STATE SENATE (Dist. 26)

Incumbent Darcy Jech of Kingfisher carried 42.8% of the votes in the three-man Republican primary, landing in a runoff with Brady Butler (37.5%).

JJ Stitt finished third with 19.7% districtwide and second in Kingfisher County with 29.1%.

With no other parties fielding candidates, the race will be decided in the Aug. 23 runoff.

District 26 Results: Jech 4,054 (42.8%); Butler 3,556 (37.5%); Stitt 1,871 (19.7%).

County Results: Jech 960 (49.9%); Stitt 561 (29.1%); Butler 405 (21%).
