2020 harvest in progress

By

The 2020 wheat harvest has begun all across Kingfisher County.

Good quality with test weights reported at 60 pounds per bushel and above was reported from south to north across the county.

The wheat began trickling in Friday at the CHS Elevator in Okarche and increased in volume Saturday and Sunday.

Most county elevators began receiving wheat on Saturday and the flow increased on Sunday.

CHS Elevator in Hennessey reported wheat arriving there Monday morning.

Harold Ebers brought in the first load at Hennessey.

The wheat tested 64 pounds in weight and Ebers said the yield at this point appears to be about 40 bushels per acre.

Ebers had completed harvesting about 20 percent of the crop as of Monday evening.

A Hennessey elevator spokesperson said wheat arriving there Monday was weighing 63 to 65 pounds per bushel.

Wheeler Brothers Elevator in Kingfisher Manager Randall Varnell said wheat started arriving there on Saturday with the flow increasing on Sunday.

He said moisture tests from early samples ranged from 13 to 60 percent.

The industry standard is for a top moisture test of 13.5 percent.

The weather forecast for the rest of the week calls for clear and hot days.

Okarche Grain and Feed Manager Gary Altizer reported a fine kickoff to the harvest.

One producer who harvested a 180-acre field had a weight average above 60 pounds test weight and a yield of 60 bushels per acre.

The wheat was clean and had good color without a lot of dockage.

Okarche Grain and Feed’s Kingfisher Station, located south of Kingfisher, was prepared to receive wheat beginning Monday.

Cashion Grain and Feed Elevator Manager John Schaefer reported receiving three loads of wheat Saturday with test weights up to 63.5 pounds per bushel.

Schaefer said wheat had already arrived Monday but he figured that area would be two to three days behind Kingfisher and Okarche in reaching peak harvest level.

Chris Townsley, Kingfisher CHS Elevator location manager, reported that wheat began arriving Saturday afternoon and picked up Sunday with a half dozen producers bringing in wheat.

He said the quality was really good with test weights from 62 to 64 pounds.

“With good harvest weather, we should be really cranked up by mid-week, he said.

Loyal CHS Elevator Manager Eugene Roach reported a few loads arrived there Sunday afternoon with test weights of 62 to 64 pounds per bushel.

B.J. Waeger, manager of the Wheeler Brothers Elevator at Omega, reported harvest started there Saturday and gained speed on Sunday.

He predicted a quick pickup in harvesting with warm, dry conditions forecasted for the rest of the week.

Waeger said the only flaw is that wheat is testing a little lower in protein content than millers like. Test weights there were running 60 pounds and above.
