School board moves 2021 KHS graduation to May 22

After a poll of the senior class, the Kingfisher Board of Education on Monday night agreed to change the date of this year’s high school graduation.

The board voted unanimously at its regular October meeting to change the date to Saturday, May 22, 2021.

Like last year, it will be held at the high school football stadium.

“That’s what they requested,” KHS Principal Todd Overstreet told board members.

The original date for graduation was May 15, but there was some push back for that day.

Johnnie Sue McCully, the mother of a senior this year, noted when addressing the board in late June that several colleges and universities also had graduations on that date, presenting a potential conflict for some families, including her own.

“There are so many colleges graduating that day that some of us parents will have to decide which to go to,” said McCully, whose oldest daughter is set to graduate from Texas Tech University on May 15.

Superintendent Jason Sternberger thanked McCully for bringing the conflict to his and the board’s attention and said it would be taken under consideration.

Overstreet and Sternberger said after talking with members of this year’s senior class, the new date was picked.

The graduation is tentatively set for 11 a.m.

“Of course, May is storm season, but if we schedule it that early, it gives us the day to work with,” Sternberger said.

The 2020 graduation was also held at the football stadium last May to allow for social distancing for graduates and attendees.

A large video board was installed on the stadium’s south end to allow for better viewing.

Sternberger said the plan was to use the video board again this year.
